5 unusual anecdotes about the Monaco Grand Prix

The Shortest Race in History

In 1996, the Monaco Grand Prix set an unenviable record: the fewest number of drivers to cross the finish line. Out of 22 starters, only 3 drivers finished the race after a series of crashes and mechanical failures caused by disastrous weather conditions. Olivier Panis took his only Formula 1 victory in what remains to this day the most chaotic race in Monaco.

A Royal Podium... Without the Winner

In 1984, a young driver named Ayrton Senna nearly caused a major upset in the rainy Monaco Grand Prix. Starting from 13th position, he overtook his rivals at an incredible pace. But just as he was about to pass Alain Prost for the lead, race officials decided to stop the race due to the weather conditions. Prost was declared the winner, but many believe Senna would have triumphed if the race had continued.

A Tunnel Without Light

In 2004, a rare incident occurred in the circuit's famous tunnel. A power outage plunged this section of the track into total darkness during free practice! Drivers, accustomed to this dark but artificially lit passage, had to slow down drastically, adding an extra challenge to an already complex circuit.

The Time a Driver Ended Up in the Harbor

The Monaco circuit is famous for its tight corners and barriers that are very close to the track. But in 1955, Alberto Ascari experienced a unique misadventure: after losing control of his car at the harbor chicane, he plunged directly into the Mediterranean Sea! Fortunately, he escaped unscathed, rescued by spectators and sailors.

An Improvised Pit Stop

In 2011, Jenson Button experienced one of the most unexpected pit stops. While leading the race, a strategic mistake by his McLaren team forced him to make three pit stops, ruining his chances of victory. This mishap allowed Sebastian Vettel to win, illustrating how crucial strategy is on the Monaco circuit.
