Monaco among the ten Grands Prix to host a Sprint race in 2027
Formula 1 has unveiled its 2027 calendar, with a major change to the championship format: 10 Grand Prix weekends will feature a Sprint race, compared with six in previous seasons. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the venues selected and will host a Sprint for the first time in its history.
A Sprint race at the 2027 Monaco Grand Prix
The 2027 Monaco Grand Prix will take place from June 4 to 6, and will be one of the ten events to feature the Sprint format.
This is a major new development for the legendary Monaco weekend. Since Sprint races were introduced in Formula 1 in 2021, the streets of Monte-Carlo had never hosted this format.
The 2027 schedule will therefore bring a different structure to the Monaco weekend. Spectators will have the opportunity to attend two qualifying sessions: Sprint Qualifying on Friday, followed by the traditional qualifying session for the Grand Prix on Saturday. The Sprint race itself will take place on Saturday morning.
Ten Sprint events on the 2027 F1 calendar
Formula 1 is significantly increasing the number of Sprint weekends in 2027. Ten events will feature the format during the season.
The ten Sprint weekends will be held in:
- Bahrain – March 12 to 14
- Australia – April 2 to 4
- Japan – April 9 to 11
- Canada – May 21 to 23
- Monaco – June 4 to 6
- Great Britain – July 2 to 4
- Italy – September 3 to 5
- Brazil – November 5 to 7
- Qatar – December 3 to 5
- Abu Dhabi – December 10 to 12
Bahrain, Australia, Japan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi will join the Sprint calendar, while Canada, Silverstone, Monza, São Paulo and Lusail will host the format again.
A unique challenge on the streets of Monte-Carlo
The introduction of a Sprint race in Monaco will be particularly interesting because of the unique characteristics of the circuit.
The Monte-Carlo track is one of the narrowest on the Formula 1 calendar, with overtaking traditionally difficult. Qualifying performance and track position therefore play a crucial role throughout the weekend.
With the new format, drivers will need to be competitive from Friday's Sprint Qualifying, before racing in the Sprint on Saturday morning. The main Grand Prix qualifying session will then take place on Saturday afternoon.
Sunday will remain dedicated to the Monaco Grand Prix, but fans in the Principality will now have an additional competitive session to enjoy.
A busier weekend for Formula 1 fans
The Sprint format adds another competitive race to selected Grand Prix weekends, creating a denser programme for spectators.
For Monaco, this means a particularly intense three-day schedule, with more opportunities to see the world's leading Formula 1 drivers and teams competing on the famous streets of Monte-Carlo.
The Sprint will also add another strategic challenge for the teams, as they will have to balance performance, tyre management and risk over a shorter race distance before Sunday's Grand Prix.
The Monaco Grand Prix remains a key date in 2027
The Monaco event will remain one of the highlights of the Formula 1 season in 2027.
The championship will feature 24 Grands Prix in 22 countries, with Monaco retaining its traditional place among Formula 1's most iconic venues.
For fans attending the Principality in June 2027, the weekend will therefore be different from previous editions: the Monaco Grand Prix will host its first-ever F1 Sprint, alongside the qualifying sessions and the traditional Grand Prix on Sunday.
